Create documents in Google Drive

Creating a new document is a basic function of any application. Through Google Drive and Google’s set of office applications, users have several options for creating various document types. They are created in Google’s proprietary format.

Google Drive

Google Drive, the central document management system, that every Google account holder has access to has two ways of creating new documents. It can be done through the New button and the right-click menu.

New button

Clicking the New button launches a menu with a list of document types. Click the desired one to launch the new document in a new tab in the browser window. The document will be untitled, and it won’t be saved until content is added to it or it is given a new title.

  1. First, double-click the desired folder to enter it. The new document will be stored in the document that you are in.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Click the desired document type.

Right-click menu

Right clicking in a list of documents or folders in Google Drive launches a menu with a list of document types. This is the same list that is in the New button list, Click the desired one to launch a new document in a new tab.

  1. First, double-click the desired folder to enter it. The new document will be stored in the document that you are in.
  2. Right click in the folder, but click at the top or bottom of list of documents and folders. Otherwise a document or folder will be selected and a different right-click menu will appear.
  3. Click the desired document type.

The new document will open in a new tab in the browser window. It will be untitled, and it won’t be saved until content is added to it, or it is given a new title.

Google applications

The four standard applications in Google’s office suite have similar File menus. Four of the applications have an identical New sub-menu, that lists the same six items. NOTE: The top item in the list changes based on the application. Document will be at the top in Google Docs, for example.

  • From template
  • Spreadsheet
  • Presentation
  • Form
  • Drawing

The New sub-menu is in the File menu of Docs (the text editor), Sheets (the spreadsheet application), Slides (presentation application), and Drawing (the vector graphics application).

  1. Click the File menu in one of the four applications.
  2. Highlight the New sub-menu.
  3. Click the desired document type.
