There are several ways of creating a new document in the Microsoft Office Online ecosystem. Two of the ways are through Word Online’s document manager and through an existing Word Online document.
Document manager

Word Online’s document manager has a row of icons for creating new documents across the top. One is New Blank Document. The others are templates of various kinds.

- Click the blank document icon or one of the templates. A new document replaces the document manager in the Web browser tab.
- Click the document name to give it a new name. By default it is named “Book #”.
- Type over the “Book #” name with a desired name in the File Name text box. This is at the top of the dialog that appears when you click the document name in step 2.
Document
The File menu contains two tabs in the left, blue column for creating a new document. There are icons for a blank document and ones for creating a document based on a template in both the Home and New tabs.

Home tab
- Click the File menu. This launches the File dialog with the list of tabs in the left column.
- Click the Home tab, if it is not already selected.
- Click Blank document or one of the template icons. The new document will launch in a new tab.
New tab
- Click the File menu. This launches the File dialog with the list of tabs in the left column.
- Click the New tab, if it is not already selected.
- Click Blank document or one of the template icons. The new document will launch in a new tab.
Changing document location
By default, documents created from the document manager are saved in the main folder of Microsoft OneDrive. A document created from another document will be stored in the same document as the one used to create it.
Through OneDrive, a document’s location can be changed.

- Go to the folder where the document you want to move is located.
- Click the circle in the top, right of the icon for the document, so there is a check in it.
- Click Move To at the top of the OneDrive window in the Web browser.
- Click the desired folder in the dialog that appears to the right of the window. Clicking arrows to the left of the folders to reveal sub-folders within them.
- Click the Move button at the top of the dialog. A dialog appears, confirming the move.
